Knowing how to look after your new tyres from Goodspanner is just as important as knowing when ones to select for your vehicle. John and his team of trained mechanics at Goodspanner know this and are always keen to keep their customers informed of how to best look after their new tyres. Here are a few of their handy hints for you to know…
In normal driving conditions, you should always keep your tyre pressures at the level recommended by the manufacturer (you can find this on a sticker generally inside the car’s door frame or glove box).
In very hot conditions or when driving with a heavy load, inflate your tyres to the higher pressure as recommended by the manufacturer on the sticker.
Check your tyre pressures regularly and always when they are cold (meaning before the vehicle has been driven for an extended period).
If your tyres are under inflated, you will use more fuel and your car’s handling will be negatively impacted on, possibly leading to tyre damage.
Always keep your spare tyre inflated as well; you never know when it may come in handy!
If your tyres are wearing unevenly, it may be an indication of a steering or suspension issue.
The legal minimum tyre tread is 1.6mm. Always replace your tyres when the tread level has reached this level at the very latest.
Ask for your tyres to be balanced and a wheel alignment carried out whenever you get a new set of tyres.
Can You Change a Wheel?
Changing a wheel may seem like a simple everyday task for John and his team, but for those who don’t come across this hurdle very often, it can be a rather daunting challenge! To help out those of you who may not be quite so confident with this task, feel free to print out this quick checklist and keep it in your glove box for that day…if it comes…that you may have to do it yourself!
If your wheel needs to be changed, find a safe place to park your car with the wheel that needs changing preferably facing away from the road and put the transmission into park or first gear for an automation or manual respectively.
Switch on your hazards lights.
Find your car jack and spare tyre, usually located in the trunk of the car.
Remove the wheel cover from the wheel.
Before jacking up the car, loosen the wheel nuts as when it is off the ground the wheel will spin making it more difficult.
Before jacking up your car, check the owner’s manual to find the recommended place to use the jack on your car.
Put the jack in the recommended place and jack up the car until the wheel if just above the ground. Yours jack should come with further instructions if you need them.
As a precautionary measure, slide the spare tyre underneath the car in case the jack collapses.
Take off the wheel nuts completely now and slide the wheel off, placing it then under the car.
Slide the spare tyre out from under the car and put it onto the hub.
Tighten the wheel nuts as tight as you can by hand.
Remove the changed wheel from under the car and put it where the spare tyre was kept.
Lower the car back onto the ground and then remove the jack.
Tighten the nuts all of the way and replace the wheel cover.
Schedule in a time to have your flat tyre repaired or replaced as you no longer have a spare tyre.
